Apple’s custom chips are going so well it figured why not take a crack at screens. The next step in dependence reduction is becoming less reliant on Samsung and LG.
Way back when, Ford was vertically integrated. That’s a fancy way of saying it owned and operated everything in the production process.
Then manufacturing was unbundled. Probably something about balance sheets and competitive advantage and minimizing overhead and being lean. There’s a healthy dose of snark there but it worked, the new system worked.
Then: Covid.
Now supply chains are simultaneously unbundling (the flight from China) and rebundling (Apple slowly taking control of more pieces).
The pandemic was the punch in the face that threw the old paradigm out the window. Now we watch as a new one(s) takes shape.
